OpenAI Drops GPT-5.5-Cyber, While Anthropic Still Suffers in Regulatory Jail
Oh look, OpenAI is back at it with another 'safety-first' miracle. While Anthropic gets the cold shoulder from the government for its Mythos 5 model, OpenAI is busy getting pats on the head for essentially doing the same thing. How convenient.
The new GPT-5.5-Cyber has officially claimed the throne on the CyberGym benchmark with a score of 85.6%. It narrowly edges out Anthropic's Mythos 5, which sits at 83.8% and is currently serving an indefinite time-out due to US export bans. The real kicker is that GPT-5.5-Cyber is effectively a government-approved version of the exact same capabilities that got Mythos 5 restricted.
While Mythos 5 and Fable 5 were crippled after regulators discovered they could bypass their own safety mechanisms, GPT-5.5-Cyber is being rolled out to 'verified defenders' with full blessing from agencies like CAISI and ONCD. The model uses the CyberGym benchmark to prove it can replicate known vulnerabilities, outperforming the base GPT-5.5 across the board, including scoring 39.5% on ExploitGym versus the base model's 25.95%.
Alongside the release, OpenAI is pushing Daybreak, a broader initiative that includes 'Patch the Planet.' This effort involves paying researchers to fix flaws in open-source projects like cURL, Go, Python, and Sigstore, supported by partnerships with security giants like Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, and Wiz. The Codex Security plugin has already scanned over 30 million commits to keep the corporate wheels turning.
It’s truly inspiring to see how a little strategic lobbying transforms a dangerous 'cyber-offensive AI' into a 'trusted defensive tool.' One company gets a regulatory ban for being too honest about its capabilities, while the other gets a global rollout permit by simply wrapping its code in a flag of cooperation. The speed at which regulators decide who is a 'good actor' based on corporate PR rather than technical reality remains a masterclass in modern tech theater.
