The UK Government has officially unveiled plans to prohibit social media access for anyone under 16, aiming to reset the digital boundaries for an entire generation. This sweeping policy targets platforms that facilitate content creation and interaction, meaning Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X will effectively be off-limits for minors. While the state is trying to curate a safer environment, they are leaving WhatsApp and Signal untouched for now, presumably assuming that direct messaging is less addictive than the infinite scroll of a feed.
Technical restrictions are set to go far beyond just logging out. The plan involves blocking live streaming and direct messages from strangers across social platforms and gaming services. Even more, authorities are flirting with 'digital curfews' and hard-coding limits on infinite scrolling for anyone under 18. The proposed AI-driven romantic chatbots, which have been acting as questionable digital companions, are also on the chopping block.
To enforce this, the government intends to implement age-verification tech that is allegedly harder to bypass than current measures, citing a massive survey of 116,000 citizens. With the first phase expected to roll out by spring 2027, the Online Safety Act is effectively getting a massive, iron-fisted upgrade. It is a bold experiment in state-mandated reality, assuming that a passport check can actually stop a teenager with a VPN and a dream.
