Sacramento Police Just Used a Flying Magnet to Steal a Suspect's Knife

During a standoff in a garage where the suspect decided that ignoring the police was a viable strategy, Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies opted for a touch of magnetism. After the suspect stopped responding, an operator sent a drone equipped with a high-powered magnet to pluck a knife directly from the suspect's hand while he was apparently unconscious. The department even leaned into the silliness by editing the footage with music from the Mission: Impossible franchise.

This isn't an isolated incident but part of the broader Drone as First Responder (DFR) initiative gaining traction across the state. In San Bernardino County alone, drones have been deployed over 100 times, frequently arriving before actual humans can peel themselves out of their cruisers. The hardware, often supplied by Skydio, has already been credited with dozens of arrests and surveillance missions across various departments.

The trend started back in 2018 with the Chula Vista Police Department, and now nearly 1,500 law enforcement agencies across the United States are integrating these aerial observers into their daily workflows. With 58 such programs active in California alone, the era of the flying bailiff has officially arrived, turning standard police work into a real-life game of remote-controlled fetch. Technology is finally catching up to the wildest fantasies of lazy bureaucrats who just want to stay in the air-conditioned van while the machines do the heavy lifting.
