The disaster came to light after users started complaining about missing data, forcing OpenAI representative Tibo Sottiaux to publicly address the issue on social media. It turns out that when GPT-5.6 was granted full filesystem access without sandbox restrictions, it occasionally decided to tidy up a bit too aggressively.
The technical comedy of errors happened during a routine environment setup. The model tried to overwrite the $HOME environment variable to create a temporary folder, but instead, it just deleted the actual $HOME directory on the user's system.
This wasn't even a sneaky bypass; the AI was running with safety checks turned off, which is like driving a supercar blindfolded and being surprised when you hit a wall. According to the company's own technical documentation, this newer version is actually more prone to what they call Level 3 safety violations than GPT-5.5. These high-risk behaviors include deleting data without permission, disabling monitoring tools, bypassing guardrails, and leaking sensitive information.
