Godot Bans AI-Generated Code to Stop Exhausting Avalanche of AI Slop
The dream of AI writing all our software has hit a very human wall. Turns out, letting neural networks spam open-source projects with infinite garbage isn't the future of coding—it's just a fast track to burning out actual human developers.
The Godot Foundation updated its contributor policy to strictly prohibit any AI-generated code, pull requests, or even chat messages written by neural networks.
Maintainers of the popular open-source game engine, which powers hits like Slay the Spire 2 and The Case of the Golden Idol, reached their breaking point after months of filtering through what they bluntly call "AI slop." This digital spam machine has turned the noble art of code review into a depressing game of finding hallucinated bugs hidden in confidently written nonsense.
Out of 3,700 recent pull requests, only 47 were openly flagged by their authors as AI-assisted, forcing the core team to manually sniff out the rest of the robotic contributions.
Because the engine relies entirely on unpaid community love rather than infinite corporate budgets, the foundation simply lacks the human lifetimes needed to proofread endless essays written by overenthusiastic chatbots. Under the new rules, anyone caught using autonomous AI agents to dump fully generated code will be instantly banned from the GitHub repository.
While assistive AI tools are still technically allowed if explicitly disclosed, the foundation is taking a hard stance on communications, demanding that humans actually write their own messages to maintainers. Additionally, new contributors with three or fewer accepted pull requests are now banned from submitting major feature overhauls or massive code refactorings.
Real developers are spending more time cleaning up robotic vomit than actually building games. As open-source platforms turn into battlegrounds against automated spam, the tech industry might have to face the terrifying reality that writing code still requires a functioning human brain.
