The automated research tool alphaXiv has officially switched its backend from Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 to the open-weights GLM-5.2. This pivot follows recent US export restrictions that effectively locked international researchers out of Anthropic’s proprietary tech. By integrating GLM-5.2, the tool managed to run a complete reinforcement learning comparison using two nodes of eight Nvidia H100 accelerators, all while debugging its own environment dependencies on the fly.
alphaXiv is essentially a digital janitor for the arXiv preprint server. Instead of manually wrestling with broken code, users can swap a URL prefix to let the agent deploy repositories, fix dependency hell, and verify reproducibility. The GLM-5.2 model, developed by Z.ai, brings 750 billion parameters and a massive context window to the table. Because it uses an open-weights license, it provides a level of operational stability that no regulator can simply delete with a stroke of a pen.
Technical trade-offs exist, of course. GLM-5.2 lacks native vision capabilities, so it spends time writing numpy code to parse data instead of just 'looking' at charts like its Anthropic counterparts. For now, this is less about 'autonomous scientific discovery' and more about automating the tedious engineering loop of setting up experiments. When the industry relies on proprietary gatekeepers, the only way to avoid a dead-end is to build on tech that can't be revoked.
