GitHub Copilot Can Now Browse and Test Websites in VS Code

Developers can officially stop alt-tabbing to Chrome. GitHub just unleashed Copilot into the browser, letting the AI click, type, and hunt console errors on its own. Let's see how many production databases get wiped by a rogue click.

The new update integrates browser automation directly into VS Code, allowing the AI agent to open local pages, click buttons, input text, and even drag-and-drop elements like a human testing their code. Instead of manually clicking through a signup form for the hundredth time, developers can now tell GitHub Copilot to run the user flow and find out why the submit button is broken.

This agentic upgrade goes beyond simple script execution by letting the assistant read page content, take screenshots, and actively harvest errors from the browser console. When the AI encounters a complex sequence, it can spin up automated scripts to speed through multi-step user paths without breaking a sweat, while developers watch the action unfold directly inside the editor's browser panel.

To keep the AI from accidentally buying ten lawnmowers on Amazon, GitHub has locked down the agent's permissions. By default, any tabs opened by the user remain completely private unless explicitly shared, and the agent's own tabs are sandbox-isolated, meaning Copilot cannot steal daily session cookies or browser storage.

For high-risk requests like accessing the camera, microphone, geolocation, or reading the clipboard, the editor will halt and wait for manual approval. On the corporate side, IT administrators can completely disable these browser tools globally or restrict the exact web domains the AI is allowed to visit.

The dream of never leaving the code editor is finally becoming a chaotic reality, turning developers into passive supervisors of their own automated clones. It is only a matter of time before these autonomous browser agents learn to bypass CAPTCHAs, argue on forums, and write code to fix the bugs they created.
