Cursor Is Building Origin to Replace GitHub with AI-Only Coding
AI agents are writing code so fast they are DDOSing poor old GitHub. Since humans are now officially too slow to review code, Cursor is launching a brand-new repository platform designed entirely for bots.
Acquiring the code-review startup Graphite in 2025 was just the setup for Cursor's master plan, officially corporate-unveiled by founder Tomas Reimers. The team is building Origin, a git-repository hosting platform designed from scratch for AI agents rather than human developers who need coffee breaks and sleep.
During a live demonstration, the system handled a staggering 22.6 commits per second in a single repository, alongside hundreds of thousands of clones and pushes per hour. This chaotic digital sweatshop is powered by dozens of AI agents autonomously writing, testing, and merging code simultaneously without screaming at each other in Slack.
Traditional platforms like GitHub, built back in 2008, rely on humans painstakingly reading line-by-line diffs and resolving merge conflicts with clunky text markers. Origin throws that out, communicating with AI agents through semantic meaning—instantly understanding which function signatures changed, which tests are affected, and what dependencies were modified.
The role left for humans in this brave new workflow is reduced to clicking a single final approval button. The public launch of this bot-centric ecosystem is scheduled for autumn 2026, with an early waiting list already open.
The transition from writing code to simply signing off on machine-generated output is accelerating, turning software engineering into a high-speed monitoring job. Soon, the only human contribution to a multi-million dollar software project might just be a tired finger hovering over the "approve" button.
