Apple nukes VK from orbit: A digital eviction noticed by no one
The walled garden of Apple just got a little more exclusive, as the entire VK ecosystem gets the boot from the App Store. It is truly heartwarming to see Cupertino maintain such high standards of corporate cleansing in the middle of a global tantrum.
In a move that surprised absolutely no one but apparently shocked the folks at VK, Apple wiped their entire suite of apps—including Mail.ru, Odnoklassniki, and Dzen—from the App Store without so much as a "please" or "thank you." The purge happened in waves, with the main social network being the final casualty of this digital eviction.
While existing installations will technically keep functioning, users are effectively stuck in software purgatory. Without access to the App Store servers, there will be no more updates, and perhaps more annoyingly, push notifications are dead on arrival. Apple has a nasty habit of revoking the delivery tokens for banished apps, leaving users to manually check their mail like it is 2005.
VK is currently playing the "we aren't sanctioned" card, claiming they have the legal paperwork to prove their innocence, which is adorable given that Apple is essentially a sovereign state that doesn't care much for your local legal opinions. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Digital Development is throwing a fit, threatening the Federal Antimonopoly Service, as if a Russian regulator can actually force Tim Cook to change his mind.
The era of pretending that platforms are neutral utilities is officially dead. When a trillion-dollar company decides you are persona non grata, your user base becomes collateral damage in a corporate proxy war that no one asked to watch.
