The AI company Anthropic shocked the biotech world at its "The Briefing: AI for Science" event by announcing it will bypass traditional pharma clients to research and develop its own proprietary medicines. Instead of just selling its new Claude Science workspace to existing laboratories, the startup is jumping straight into the wet and messy world of physical biology.
Lead of life sciences Erik Kauderer-Abrams confirmed the company will focus on "neglected" diseases, though they completely ignored journalists' questions about which specific illnesses they actually plan to cure. This aggressive move puts them in direct competition with their own software customers, joining the ranks of Isomorphic Labs and Insilico Medicine. The tech giant is already aggressively headhunting top biologists from Big Pharma and academic institutions, building physical "wet labs" to run actual chemical experiments. Because nothing says "we trust our AI" quite like renting real estate to double-check if the computer is hallucinating deadly poisons.
Industry experts remain highly skeptical, pointing out that not a single AI-designed drug has ever passed full clinical trials or received FDA approval. Oxford professor Frank von Delft warned that AI models cannot bypass the brutal, multi-year reality of testing for toxicity and efficacy on living organisms. Clinical trials remain the ultimate filter where promising computer models go to die, a process that historically takes up to ten years and hundreds of millions of dollars.
