Amazon staff mock their own AI as 'Sloppenheimer' in secret Slack memes

Original version ·

When your own engineers start calling your cutting-edge AI tools 'slop,' maybe it is time to re-evaluate those trillion-dollar projections. Amazon's internal chat is currently a roasting fire of their flagship code assistant.

Inside Amazon's corporate Slack, software engineers created a private channel called #actual-aws-memes to blow off steam and ruthlessly mock the company's generative AI products. The highlight of this internal rebellion is the nickname 'Sloppenheimer' — a term coined to describe the tidal wave of useless AI-generated code, or 'slop,' produced by tools like their flagship code assistant, Kiro.

One popular meme shows the logo of Kiro against a plane taking off, captioned with a confident 'Now I have everything I need,' immediately followed by a frame of passengers stranded on the tarmac with a narrator voice-over confirming the AI absolutely did not have everything. Another one depicts just the tip of an iceberg, with the AI cheerfully assuring the developer that it has 'the full picture.'

The mocking is not limited to coding helpers. Employees are also taking swings at other hyped-up products, including the shopping assistant Ask Rufus, the enterprise chatbot Amazon Q, and the video generation model Amazon Nova. One particularly creative graphic combines the Kiro logo, a bee, and a lion to phonetically spell out 'Kiro be lying.'

When confronted with the leaks, the retail giant's PR machine went into classic damage-control mode. A spokesperson claimed that a handful of disgruntled memes does not represent the majority of users, insisting that they value feedback while doubling down on the narrative that their AI has a 'fundamentally different approach' designed to be production-ready and correct.

It seems the trillion-dollar dream of replacing expensive software engineers with flawless AI coding gods is hitting a slight roadblock: the engineers themselves. Nothing says 'our product is ready for prime time' quite like your own technical staff treating it like an expensive digital dumpster fire.

if the people who build it think it's trash, why are we paying for it? lmao

typical media overhyping some internal jokes. every dev team mocks their own codebase, this is literally just standard tech culture.
