Vesuvius Challenge AI Reads Charred Scroll Without Unrolling It, Finding Stoics

Historians are weeping tears of pure joy. Using high-tech scanning and machine learning, researchers have pulled ancient secrets straight out of a literal lump of coal, proving that even a volcanic catastrophe couldn't burn human curiosity.

The team at the Vesuvius Challenge targeted the papyrus PHerc. 1667, which had spent nearly two millennia masquerading as a piece of charcoal after the infamous eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Previous attempts to pry open these delicate tubes in the 19th and 20th centuries went about as well as opening a dry mummy with a sledgehammer, instantly turning the outer layers into useless dust. What remained was a tightly fused 8-centimeter core.

To peek inside without causing a historical tragedy, researchers sent the lump to the ESRF synchrotron in Grenoble for high-resolution X-ray microtomography. After capturing the 3D volume, custom machine learning models took over the heavy lifting, virtually flattening the rolled geometry and detecting microscopic ink traces that were chemically almost identical to the charred papyrus itself. While algorithms did the tedious squinting to find the ink, human papyrologists stepped in to actually read and translate the resurrected characters.

The virtual unrolling produced about 1.4 meters of continuous Greek text spread across 22 columns. This recovered masterpiece turned out to be a Stoic philosophical treatise from the 2nd century BC focusing on human nature and moral development, which name-drops Aristocreon, a pupil of the famous philosopher Chrysippus.

The same digital resurrection technique was quickly applied to two other scrolls. In PHerc. Paris 4, the scanning was so crisp that it immediately confirmed the $700,000 grand prize-winning translation from earlier this year, while PHerc. 139 yielded the title of the eighth book of "On Gods" by the epicurean philosopher Philodemus. All code, data, and trained models have been dumped into the open-source wild, accompanied by a fresh $1 million bounty for anyone who can decode the next scroll.

With hundreds of these carbonized scrolls sitting in Italian vaults, humanity is suddenly on the verge of downloading a lost library of antiquity. It turns out the ultimate weapon against historical erasure isn't a brush and a magnifying glass, but a massive neural network trained on X-ray slices of burnt paper.
